Tai Chi Chuan is an internal Chinese martial art practiced by people all over the world because of its training in defense and health benefits. It is also usually observed for other personal reasons. As a result, both traditional and modern forms of training exist. The term Tai Chi Chuan means “supreme ultimate fist”. A few forms of training are particularly famous for their slow movement.
Ever since the initial extensive promotion of the health benefits of Tai Chi Chuan in the early 20th century, it has acquired a worldwide support from people with little or no concern in martial arts training because of its health benefits and maintenance. Medical studies maintain its efficiency as a substitute exercise and as a type of martial arts therapy. It is supposed to create a calm and clear state of mind, it helps to focus the mind and the movements. In addition to the over all health benefits and management of stress offered by this training, parts of traditional Chinese medicine are also taught to advanced pupils.
The Tai Chi Chuan lessons mainly involve three parts:
§ Health: An unhealthy if not uncomfortable individual may find it hard to achieve to a state of serenity or to exercise Tai Chi Chuan as a martial art. The health teaching, hence, gives attention to alleviating the corporeal effects of stress on the physique and mentality. Superior physical condition is an essential step towards efficient self-defense.
§ Meditation: The center and tranquility cultivated by the meditative aspect of tai chi chuan is seen as essential in upholding optimal well being.
§ Martial Art: The skill to exercise tai chi chuan as a self-defense is the student’s test of understanding of such art. It is the study of proper change in reaction to external forces, the study of yielding to an incoming hit instead of trying to meet it with an opposite energy. The application as a martial art is rather tricky and entails a great deal of preparation.
The viewpoint is that if one employs inflexibility to defy a violent force, then both sides are sure to be hurt at even the slightest degree. Such damage, in accordance with tai chi theory, is an expected result of meeting a violent force with the same type of force. As an alternative, students are trained to indirectly battle or defy an incoming force. They must meet it in gentleness and track its movement while remaining in bodily contact until the incoming power of attack drains itself or can be securely redirected.
Tai Chi Chuan builds a different body that is termed an energy body. This is true for Yang Tai Chi Chuan, Chen Tai Chi Chuan, or whatever type of Taiji you study. This is assuming you are following certain guidelines having to do with the energy anatomy.
First, of course, one must drop the body weight down. But, really, this is not just sinking; to understand this just close your eyes and course your awareness down through your feet. This will enable you to throw a tractor beam to the ground.
Second in this procedure, you must shift the weight, then turn the hips. You are trying to do one thing at a time, and therefore concentrating all your awareness on one thing at a time. This will ensure that you are distracted by splitting your intentions.
Third thing to do, you must hold unbendable arms throughout all postures. There will be a slight in and out of the arms, a slight wave of the arms, which will cause energy to pulse. Unbendable arms draw on and build on pure energy.
Fourth thing to do, you must pulse not just the arms, but the whole body. Push up the legs, rotate with the waist, and then pulse the arms. Do it in this exact sequence every time, and learn how to push energy through your body.
Fifth, you must learn to relax. Relaxation is the most important thing you can do, as energy will flow easiest through that which is relaxed. And, this will lead you to higher levels of the martial arts, for being able to relax creates an emptiness within the body through which awareness will flow.
These are actually the rules for creating energy in all internal styles. Do these five things with Pa Kua Chang, or Hsing i, or that esoteric form of white crane chi gung, and your body will become more than flesh. It will transmogrify into a power body, a kinetic energy body, and it will become capable of feats far beyond the dreams of a simple physical cultist.
The key here is to believe that you are more than flesh, that you are a spiritual being, and that there is a link between the flesh and the spirit. That link is the energy body, and that link can be forged through the five rules listed here. That and a patient practice of such martial arts as Yang Tai Chi Chuan, Chen Tai Chi Chuan.
